Explaining IB Middle Years Assessment Standards

Weekly Update from GISC – Special Guest Edition – March 28, 2025 – By MYP Coordinator Megan Rich.
Dear Parents,

As parents, have you ever wondered how assessment can truly reflect your child's learning journey? My name is Megan Rich, and I am the MYP Coordinator at our school. I will be hosting a GISC Insight on Tuesday, April 8 from 8:30 to 9:30 AM, where we will delve into the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Assessment standards and grading practices, focusing on their vital role in supporting your child's development.

We will explore what makes an authentic assessment, which connects classroom activities to real-world applications and enhances engagement and understanding. You'll learn how the MYP promotes essential skills-building and sets clear expectations through detailed rubrics, ensuring that students know what is required for success.

As I discussed in the State of the School presentation, we have been focusing this year on improving the alignment of summative assessments with formative assessments, and next year, we will be using the IB grading system, which features a 1-8 scale and emphasizes student growth over time. Because of these changes, our middle school grade reports will provide much more comprehensive information about your child's learning and progress. We will discuss these changes and explore examples at the GISC Insight while also exploring standardization practices that uphold fairness and consistency in evaluation across all MYP classrooms. I hope you will join me on April 8 to discover how these components work together to enrich your child's educational experience in the MYP framework.

Wishing you a great weekend,

Meg
