Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Our Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

As an international school, diversity of background, culture, language, nationality, and experience are absolutely vital to our mission. For our community, global citizenship does not only mean an increased understanding of languages or cultures. It also means that we promote openness and empathy among our staff and students, understanding each other’s differences and celebrating our unique experiences together. GISC is committed to fostering a sense of community in our school, welcoming students, staff, and families from all backgrounds. Above all, GISC seeks to support our entire community, working to make everyone who walks through our door feel welcome.

[GISC's] welcoming and inclusive community seeks to promote understanding and intercultural understanding through an intentionally planned bilingual IB programme.

How does GISC Engage with DEI?

GISC staff take part in professional development courses focused on inclusion, including ISACS diversity summits. In order to promote equity in the classroom, we also view diversity as learning-inclusion, and seek to create more supportive environments for neurodiverse students. As an IB World School, we aim to see and hear perspectives that are far outside our local experience. Our curriculum works to engage with important opportunities for growth like Black History Month, learning about indigenous peoples, or designing new units of inquiry to research inventors from historically marginalized communities. Of course, as a German school, one of our most important projects is recognition of Jewish history and representation.

We also receive Title IV federal funding for our work prioritizing diversity and inclusion, as well as world languages. We have purposefully used this funding to promote technology inclusion and to fill our library with new perspectives from diverse authors. These books contain authentic voices and represent our diverse community, allowing our students to engage with LGBTQIA+ and international authors. Reading lists assigned to students prioritize global representation, including unique German voices (for example, authors discussing the African diaspora in Germany).

At GISC, inclusion is a process that does not end – we seek to promote understanding and friendship at all times.
